How many times can you take the SAT exam?

Every year millions of students take up the SAT exam. The SAT is an entrance exam used by most colleges and universities to make admissions decisions. The SAT is a multiple-choice, pencil-and-paper test created and administered by the College Board.

The purpose of the SAT is to measure a high school student's readiness for college, and provide colleges with one common data point that can be used to compare all applicants. College admissions officers will review standardized test scores alongside your high school GPA, the classes you took in high school, letters of recommendation from teachers or mentors, extracurricular activities, admissions interviews, and personal essays. How important SAT scores are in the college application process varies from school to school.

Overall, the higher you score on the SAT, the more options for attending and paying for college will be available to you.

Students almost always improve when they retake the SAT. When you take the SAT, you gain valuable real test experience that helps you figure out how to manage your time and deal with pressure. You might encounter certain problems that stump you and learn the concepts you missed out on for next time. Because they can take time to study and improve, lots of students choose to take the SAT more than once to improve the scores they'll ultimately add to their college applications.

Technically, you can take the SAT as many times as you want! There are no restrictions for registering for and taking the test. There are 7 test dates throughout the year, so the only limit that stands in your way is time. Many schools allow you to use Score Choice, or to pick and choose which scores from which test dates you want to send as part of your college application.

So if you're likely to improve your SAT scores every time you take the test, should you just keep taking it over and over again until you hit perfection?

There are several compelling reasons to take the SAT more than once, but you also shouldn't go totally overboard.

We would recommend not taking the SAT more than six times. If you take the SAT this many or more times, you might be sending the signal that you're not taking the test seriously enough to prep each time or that you have a lot of trouble improving your scores. The SAT is meant to test all students on a level playing field and determine their readiness for college, so it wouldn't look all that strong to have to take the test more than six times to perform well.
